  • 1.  Use of Labor Class with Project Controller

We have a new project where the client has specified that we have to track "Level of Effort" (LOE) by labor class by employee or consultant.    The labor class needs to be assigned by project by employee/consultant, and can be captured in the Employee Position/Rate Maintenance (TM.EPJ.00) screen; this table is PJEMPPJT.

We plan to set up our employees and consultants in the Project Module's Employee and Resource Maintenance (PA.EMP.00), and can use the Position/Rate maintenance to capture the labor class by project.

The problem is that this screen is designed to work with SL Payroll, and we use don't use that module.    We bring our employee labor distribution journals in through GL from Excel spreadsheets or in AP Vouchers for the consultants.   The GL Journal Transaction (01.010.00) screen and the AP Voucher and Adjustment Entry (03.010.00) screen both have a field "Labor Class" that can be populated and validated against the LABC code type.

What I need is a capability to populate the Labor Class field automatically in those screens if there is a match on the employee ID and project in the PJEMPPJT table.

Has anyone ever done this?   Would it be better to do it as a trigger, or customize the already burdened 01.010.00 and 03.010.00 screens?

Any insights or suggestions would be appreciated.

I would always choose a screen customization (VBA) over a SQL trigger. This should be a straightforward SqlFetch1 from the relevant table.
