  • 1.  SL 2018 CU5 Upgrade

    Posted Mar 11, 2021 05:11 PM
We're working on setting up a test environment for SL 2018 CU5. We're upgrading from SL 2011 SP3 so it's been a while since we've done an upgrade. Since the retirement of CustomerSource it seems more difficult to find downloads and other docs. Does the client install for CU5 need to be installed on the file server or just terminal servers or both? Has anyone experienced any issues other than the PV lists?

    Hi Sondra,
Have you already downloaded SL 2018 CU1 (the full install) and SL 2018 CU5 (the update that goes on top)? Both downloads contain the Installation Guide pdf which details exactly what you are asking. You shouldn't need to search out the installation guides separately.

Anyway, the short answer is that your process should be:
(assuming that you are using a new server for the SL 2018 CU5 install)
    1. Install SL 2018 CU1 on server & then install SL 2018 CU5 on server.
    2. Upgrade database
    3. Uninstall SL 2011 clients from workstations, reboot
    4. Install SL 2018 CU1 client on workstation & then install SL 2018 CU5 client on workstations

We run V2018 CU5 on Citrix, which actually sits on top of  Terminal Services.      When we converted to CU5, we changed our installation a bit.  In the past, we installed our Dynamics SL executables on a File Server, and then published the application on the application servers but pointed to the DSL install on centralized file server.   This had the advantage that we only had to maintain one location when adding third party apps, etc.

For CU5, we decided to install all of the DSL application on each Application Server.    We created shared file locations on the File Server for the Event Logs and custom reports, but we no longer install SL on the file server itself.   We are finding this configuration to be a tiny bit faster.  However, the downside is that we need to make sure that each application server has pointers in the Solomon.INI file to correctly point to the Event Log and Custom Report file server locations, and that any changes are installed on both App servers as well as any virtual machines.   We also made sure we used the Control Panel option to "Install Application on Remote Desktop" for any installs.

Since we have the SL executables installed on the application server, then we also have to install the client on the application server as well.

We also have a few development machines on virtual servers where we also do full installs of SL as well as the client install.

    Hope this helps.
