  • 1.  Database Maint Errors - DBBuild Log - Cannot see Admin portal in Dynamics

    Posted Feb 14, 2023 08:48 AM

    Good morning,

We are in the process of updating our DEV environment from SL 2018 CU4 to CU8. We were able to apply the CU8 .exe successfully, and ran the Database Maint process. We tried to move onto the next step by running Database Update from the Admin pane from Dynamics logged in as a Sys admin user, but we cannot see the administration portal when we log into Dynamics.

In reviewing the dbbuild log file, below is what we see, so something must have went wrong because the .csv has data in there. I cannot find the .err or .log filles.

Has anyone experienced this or have any thoughts??

    Database Name: DYNAMICSLSYS
    Error Code: -1
Error Text: D:\MSDynamics\SL\Applications\DB\common\sys\Screen.csv: Expected more than 0 rows to be imported.  Please check the .log file and .err files for table 'Screen'
    Statement: Screen, Screen.csv

    Database Name: DYNAMICSLSYS
    Error Code: -1
Error Text: D:\MSDynamics\SL\Applications\DB\common\sys\SLMenuItem.csv: Expected more than 0 rows to be imported.  Please check the .log file and .err files for table 'SLMenuItem'
    Statement: SLMenuItem, SLMenuItem.csv

    Database Name: DYNAMICSLSYS

We did run Database maint again using sis1 admin acct, and that got rid of those extra errors, however, we are still not seeing the database update in the dynamics module as the admin portal is still missing. Anyone know how to get admin portal to show up??

    Farhin,

Database Maintenance is a separate EXE from the SL Client that can only be run machines where the entire SL product was installed, typically your SL Application server.  Client only machines will not have this EXE.  On the server it will show up in the Start Menu and will be named "Microsoft Dynamics SL Database Maintenance".

    Hi Joe,

Thank you for your response, I think there was some confusion on my part. We are able to run database maintenance correctly, but it is the next step, which is running Database Update from within the Dynamics SL module, is where we are having issues. The administration portal/pane is missing, even though we are a part of the adminstrators group while logged in. I am able to launch the Database Update screen via launching the executable from the drive directly, but not from within the module as it is missing.

We had issues with the dbbulid.ini file updating correctly when we went from CU6 to CU8. After we installed CU8 on our server when we logged into Database Maintenance we didn't have the option to upgrade from CU6 to CU8. We had installed CU8 in our test environment but we went from CU1 to CU8 and didn't have any issues so we compared the dbbuild.ini in our test environment to the dbbuild.ini file in our live environment and they were different. We renamed the dbbuild.ini file in our live environment then reinstall CU8 again. It recreated the dbbuild.ini file and we were able to complete the upgrade without any other issues.

    Hi Sondra,

Yes as a part of our upgrade process, we did rename the dbbuild.ini file prior to staring the upgrade so it would re-create it. However, that did not resolve the issue.

The issue is that we are able to run database maintenance correctly, but it is the next step, which is running Database Update from within the Dynamics SL module, is where we are having issues. The administration portal/pane is missing, even though we are a part of the adminstrators group while logged in. I am able to launch the Database Update screen via launching the executable from the drive directly, but not from within the module as it is missing.

Database update for CU's are run from the Maintenance screen nowadays, though that screen you mention can still be used to bulk load particular CSV files into the database.  To update the DB for CU8, open the screen, connect to your SQL server then click on the "Update Databases" tab.  You'll see options in the "Update Scenarios" box.  Select the database(s) to be updated, select the appropriate scenario and then click the "Update Database" button.  You should have a scenario labeled "2018.x to CU8" for Cumulative Update 8.

As for the options missing in the pane within SL, if you just added the Administrative group to your access rights then you probably need to clear your SL menu cache.  To do that, click the little wrench/screwdriver button in the top right of the SL window and select "Options".  In the window that comes up, click the "Navigation" tab and then click the "Clear.." button next to "Menu System".  This forces SL to rebuild the menus for your login.

I will also mention that CU9 was recently released, so you may want to consider skipping CU8 and going straight to CU9.  You can find it on this page:

    Hi Joe,

Yes, we have ran the database maintenance successfully, however the next step in the install guide is to Use Database Update once DB Maint is done.

We have had the administrators group added for quite some time now, so it is not a new add. I have tried the clearing the menu cache but that did not work. I also tried deleting the menu files located in MenuCache folder, but that also did not work..

If your installation somehow had the Screen and/or SLMenuItem tables in the SL System database cleared, then that could be the issue.  Do you see any screen links in other panes like Financial, Inventory or Project for instance?  If not, then you can launch the screen Database Update (9810000.exe) directly from SM folder under the SL installation folder (like you showed in your screenshots) and load the CSVs to bring those values back into the System database, but beware if you have any customizations to records in those tables they may be lost so you should back up your System database before loading if you haven't already.

You said that this is in your dev env.
If the domain and company tables were not corrected to new Dev environment you will have issues.

    Run the following in SSMS:

Use [system database] -- replace system database between square brackets with correct system database name
    Select * from domain
    Select * from company

Make sure the correct SQL Server and database names are there.
