I’ve only been to a few DSLUG conferences (not all 10 like some old fogies), but I’ve learned a few things to help get the most out of the conference. Here are my top tips for getting the most out of your DSLUG conference experience: Save some energy for Thursday night. Socializing is much easier after you’ve been in sessions with people for a couple days and feels more natural than the first lunch where you try to eat the entrée and guess whether the other folks at your table are in finance or IT.  This is going to be extra important with this year's extended schedule. On the flight home take a bit to write out some of the things you learned or new ...

Did you realize that your Big Idea submissions were so critical to Conference planning?  The Conference Planning Committees, Track Chairs, and I have been hard at work these past several months – making sure that your requested ideas were thoroughly reviewed and considered in our planning.  We took the 166 Big Idea submissions from last year’s conference and incorporated many of these suggestions into this year’s Conference.  One example – Ryan S. suggested: “AP best practices was one of the best sessions. I would like to hear from others about Best AR Practices, IT, Best Payroll Practices, etc.” So, thanks to Ryan’s Big Idea, this year’s conference ...

Adding a table extension to existing SL screen: Introduction: I have found over time that there are never enough User fields in a Dynamics SL table. The solution to this problem is to create a sibling table in the database and integrate it into then maintenance screen, using VBA and the VBA API functions. The process does not take a great amount of code, but must be done carefully to get the desired result. This blog will go through the steps to add this table extension A real world application will be used in explaining this process. We had a need to add many new columns to the Sites (10.310.00) screen in the Inventory Module. Earlier in the life of SL ...

In the coming year I will work to create a monthly post on some aspect of Customization for Dynamics SL. Below is the first article in this series. Passing parameters to an existing SL screen I often find the need to call an existing SL screen from another screen. The calling screen may be done through a customization (using VBA Visual Basic for Applications) or a new screen (using Visual Basic in MS Visual Studio). This is done by passing parameters. Many screens in SL accept passed-in parameters as part of their native code. To access them, you need to have knowledge of the parameters and the sequence in which they are passed. This information ...

One of my favorite parts of the DSLUG website is our blogging community. I have grown up with a love of writing (still holding onto the dream that someday I'll write my own novel), but I understand that not everyone is immediately comfortable writing up a couple of paragraphs, adding an image, and posting it out for the community to see. Check out the 3 tips for starting a successful blog below. I highly encourage anyone who is interested in blogging to take the leap and get involved! ...

Working on SL forever.

At this time of year, I take a little time to asses what has been accomplished in the past year and set goals for the next year. I never get to this before the start of the year.... and then next thing, the year has passed again. My review that prompted this blog is the 'job security' that comes with being a developer, programmer and trainer in the Dynamics SL world. In reviewing the year, I find that I started the year with 38 tasks in the backlog. They range from really big projects to small requests from users. the numbers show that during 2016, 40 items were completed big (Implementing new PR/HR service, creating 'multi-currency' T&M entry ...
